Summation

Researchers believe grandparents are important and can strengthen families. However, in literature, role confusion exists. Dunham and Smith summarize this sentiment well: “In general, people want to maintain the ties of family but today, more than ever, they are unsure of how it can be accomplished.”156 Table 4 summarizes the state of grandparents in America.157

Society cannot change the role of grandparenthood; it can only suggest an alternative. Grandparents can reject the indulgent narrative of the twenty-first century and embrace the role God has given them as His heritage builders. Biblically, grandparents are expected to supply a rich Christian heritage for their grandchildren by transmitting faith in Christ, doctrinal beliefs, the fear of the Lord, godly values, and Christlike conduct to future generations.

The Bible has much to say about the spiritual influence that may be had during the later years of a person’s life. The last third of a person’s life does not need to be the least productive. Aging provides opportunity for spiritual impact that other times of life do not. The Bible encourages grandparents to be spiritually active in the lives of their grandchildren and to think strategically and multigenerationally about the spiritual formation of grandchildren.
